Cubs Really Appreciate Being Reminded They Were Swept Last Year
October 2, 2008
(Chicago, IL) – Did you know that the Chicago Cubs played a team from the National League West last year in the first round of the playoffs?
Did you know that the Cubs were swept in that series by the Arizona Diamondbacks?
Did you? Did you?
Because the Cubs had no idea. They totally couldn’t remember. And it’s so helpful that everyone – announcers, opponents, passers-by, even fans – is reminding them following their Game One loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“Oh get the [freak] right out of here,” said third baseman Aramis Ramirez. “We got swept last year in the first round of the playoffs? I’m absolutely blown away by that fact. That is brand new information to me.”
And it’s not just the fact that the Cubs were swept last year that is catching them off guard. It is also how similar this year’s circumstances are.
“I never once thought about the fact that we were swept last year by an NL West team despite unbearably high expectations,” manager Lou Piniella said. “It just didn’t cross my mind once. Therefore, I am so grateful that there are knowledgeable folks out there who can remind me of these things.”
“Because if there’s one thing we don’t want to be worried about, it’s the fact that there are still several games left in this series. I just want to be reminded about last year. About the similarities. I love thinking about it. It makes me feel so good. You’re so helpful.”
The Cubs are also being reminded that their top of the order hitters hit very poorly against the D-backs, not unlike their Game One effort against the Dodgers.
“I have to be perfectly honest,” leadoff man Alfonso Soriano said, fresh off of his 0-5 performance, “I don’t even remember playing last year. Two for fourteen? That’s what I did last year? Well, thanks for the reminder. I needed that. That will help me achieve in the coming days.”
Also completely new, useful, and insightful information that the Cubs are just learning about: it has been one hundred years since their last World Series title, there is a goat-related curse on the team, and a guy named Bartman may or may not have messed things up for the Cubs in 2003.

I was thinking this all last night as I was watching the game. Whoever did the announcing for TBS sucked. I miss Len/Bob and Pat/Ron.
Seriously, this article made my day. Thanks so much.
Thanks Joel. That was my venting. They announcers absolutely sucked, but of course, I was probably more mad at the Cubs than the announcers…
