The worst Jim Hendry deal we never talk about

Or if we have talked about it, I missed it. Which is very possible.

Do you realize Jim Hendry traded Jaques Jones for an All-Star? Which would be great, but he immediately shipped him away for a sack of beans.

Omar Infante would look pretty good for the Cubs right now.

Some fond memories of Andre Dawson:

1. Dawson takes a pitch in the face from Eric Show of the Padres. After regaining consciousness, has to be restrained by every player on the field, the umps, 5 ushers, 2 hot dog vendors, Ronnie Woo Woo, and Cindy Sandberg. Eric Show is last seen running to the dugout.

2. Dawson takes a called third strike and is peeved by the call. He throws a fit, and then he throws 12 bats on the field....at once....like they were tooth picks. Making sure the umpire gets the point, he throws another dozen for good measure.

3. last home game of 1987, last at bat. I had just walked in the door from spending the day at the beach. The crowd is bowing to him, chants of MVP are heard everywhere. Dawson blasts the ball onto the street. I almost cry.

4. Dawson throws runner out....at first. The first time I ever saw that, and possibly the last.

5. 1988, I'm at a game with a friend. We're there early, so we're sitting in the front row hoping to watch BP. Nobody is n the field at first, but then Dawson runs from the dugout with a teammate to play catch. I yell his name as loud as I can. He stops and looks. I give him the "Black Power" fist and he gives it right back. People nearby ask me if I know him. I tell them I do. One of the coolest moments of my young life.

There are other moments like the 3 home run games and the series against the pirates when he hit two grand slams (both losses of course), the blank check he signed to play with the Cubs, but those 5 stick out the most for me.

Pitching Prospects

With the season pretty much done by mid-July, I was hoping to see what some of our pitching prospects could do at the major league level. While I'm certainly no scout and haven't actually "seen" most of them pitch, I'm a little underwhelmed.

Andrew Cashner - 5.82 era, 1.62 whip. I still think he'll be alright, but his whip is scary. He has no control and teams still hit him at a .273 rate despite having a plus fastball.

Casey Coleman - 5.81 era, 1.61 whip. Nothing notable.

Thomas Diamond - 7.89 era, 1.80 whip. Thought he was going to be alright, but so far he's been crushed at the major league level.

Scott Maine - 1.93 era, 1.71 whip. His era is low, but he only has 4.2 innings pitched, but has given up 5 hits and 3 walks.

Marcos Mateo - 9.49 era, 1.86 whip. The opposition is only hitting .346 against him. When he's not being used for batting practice, he strikes out everything in his way (20K in 12.1 IP).

James Russell - 5.48 era, 1.48 whip. Something happened in June and he was shit after that.

Justin Berg - 5.77 era, 1.63 whip. Pretty much meh all season. His last outing ballooned his era.

Jeff Stevens - 6.11 era, 1.76 whip. Crap.

Mitch Atkins - 6.30 era, 1.80 whip. Not much of an opportunity, but still blew donkeys for quarters.

Jeff Gray - 6.75 era, 1.82 whip. More garbage.

Brian Schlitter - 12.38 era, 2.88 whip. Given his last name, it's hardly a question.

Esmailan Caridad - 11.25 era, 2.25 whip. Promising 2009. Crappy 2010. Got hurt, but still... bleh.

Spellcheck - 18.90 era, 3.30 whip. Go back to football.

So... yeah, that was depressing.

September 25 vs the cards

I've been a Cubs fan for a long while now but I've never had the opportunity to come see a game in Wrigley. I'm turning 21 on the 25th and I've decided I'm going to see a game whether it's a good time to or not. Unfortunately, a big part of my plan fell through and I'm stuck in limbo as to whether I'll be able to go or not. I had a friend going with me that was gonna take care of the driving to and from Chicago the day of the game. Now, not only do I not have anyone to go to the game with me, I don’t have a place to stay or someone to go bar hopping with after the game. I’m reaching out to the Cubs fans in and around Chicago, is there anyone that would want to go to the game, then bar hop, and let a college kid crash on their couch for a night.

Hope to hear from someone soon,
Will

Cardinals

I don't know if anyone has been paying much attention, but the Cardinals are sort of in a free-fall. They've lost 5 in a row and are 3-7 in their last 10 games. Unless they go on a miraculous run, they aren't making the playoffs.

It's kind of surprising with the starting pitching they have -- you'd think they wouldn't go on any long losing streaks.

New manager discussion

Since it appears the search is in full swing now, I thought it would be worth starting a thread on the topic.

The more I think about it, the more I'm liking Ryno for the job -- and not just for sentimental reasons. He was a smart ballplayer, he's proven himself and worked his way up the minors, he understands the unique pressures that come with playing in Chicago, and he would definitely have the respect of the players.

Other thoughts?
